This course aims to help ELT researchers design and implement sound Mixed-Methods Research (MMR) projects. In the first session of this course, we will discuss quantitative and qualitative approaches to research as well as the merits and demerits of each approach. A comparative analysis and discussion of the two approaches will set the scene for a mixed methods research (MMR) approach to research. In the second session of the course, we will focus on and discuss different issues related to the rationale, design, and implementation of MMR projects. In the third session, we will address participants’ prospective research with a potential MMR approach. Participants must send 2-3 paragraphs explaining their current or proposed research projects (could be their thesis project or an independent project) to the course coordinator after the second session. We will then discuss these tentative research projects and how they might be framed within an MMR approach. Participants should be able to develop a sound understanding of MMR by the end of this short course.
